Oxford City Council is inviting residents to join the Lord Mayor of Oxford and the Freemen of Oxford in a Civic Service at the City Church.
The service marks the Platinum Jubilee of Her Majesty the Queen and celebrates St George's Day and is being held on Sunday 24 April at 10.30am at St Michael at the North Gate, Cornmarket. The Lord Mayor of Oxford, Councillor Mark Lygo, will be joined by the Chairman of the Freemen of Oxford, Howard Crapper, and both will be doing readings.
The City Rector, The Reverend Anthony Buckley, will be giving the sermon. Music includes pieces by Henry Purcell and J.S. Bach. Parts of the service will be sung by the choir, which allows the congregation to listen with greater care, as these words are interpreted by others according to the tempi and textures of music.
The Freemen of Oxford were founded in Saxon times and mentioned in the Domesday book of 1086. At that time, only freemen could vote and trade in Oxford. They were also the only people who could be elected to the town council until 1835.
Since they were founded, the Freemen of Oxford have promoted and protected the role of apprenticeships in Oxford.

Christ’s example has taught me to seek to respect and value all people of whatever faith, or none."
