After extensive searches for a suitable new burial site, Oxford City Council recently announced work is progressing to deliver a new public green space and tranquil burial meadow on land it owns off Oxford Rd, towards Horspath.
The planned site for the Oxford Burial Meadow is a 17 acre field that can accommodate the demand for burials for approximately 40 years, all set within an attractive landscape space featuring new tree planting, wild flower meadows, and new path links around Shotover Woods.
The meadow will provide sustainable supply of burial space for Oxford residents in a natural landscape setting. The low impact burial meadow is being designed to enhance the biodiversity of the existing agricultural field, strengthen the network of tree cover, improve wildlife habitats, and provide better connections to Shotover Woods for walking and leisure for local residents.
Consultation
Key stakeholders have been involved in the developing the project brief for a burial meadow with ecological enhancements, and improved access to existing paths towards Shotover Woods.
The Council is now inviting residents to get involved and give their views on the initial outline designs that have been developed for this new community greenspace with burial use.
More detailed designs are then expected to be submitted for planning approval over the summer.
