A new cashless payment trial will get underway at Oxford City Council’s Summertown car park from 1 July.
The trial marks the start of the next stage of the City Council’s cashless initiative and is the next step towards going cashless at all of the City’s car parks.
The Council approved the move to going cashless for all its services in February 2021. Since then work has been ongoing to eradicate cash payments across Council services. A change to a cashless system across all car parks would see an annual saving of around £12,000.
The Summertown car park trial
To ensure the Summertown car park can run smoothly using cashless operation, the city along with ODS, will conduct a three month trial starting on 1 July. Once the facility for cash payments is removed, payment at the car park’s machines can be made using debit or credit cards, through the pay-by-phone provider RingGo, or via Hozah, the automatic payment provider.
"The Council-run car parks in the centre of Oxford have been cashless for some time now. We want to continue to expand the scheme so that our out-of-town car parks will all eventually become cashless. The change at Summertown offers a practical trial so we can be sure customers do not experience inconvenience.
“More and more services are becoming available only through cashless systems. The vast majority of users are paying for parking by card at the pay machine, through our pay-by-phone provider RingGo, or through Hozah the automatic payment provider.
“For the Council this represents a way to reduce administrative costs at a time of financial crisis. Trials in other car parks have gone well, but do let us know if it causes you problems.”
Councillor Louise Upton, Cabinet Member for Planning and Healthier Communities
Going cashless at the City Council’s car parks does not affect car parking run by other operators, for example at the Westgate or the County Council’s on-street parking places.
ODS will install new signage at Summertown car park to make sure no users are inconvenienced. New payment machines will also be installed.
Summertown will be the fourth of the City Council’s car parks to become cashless.
