The City of Oxford will remember Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II with a series of tributes across the city.
Book of condolence
The City Council has opened a book of condolence today (9/9) in the Long Room of Oxford Town Hall, so members of the public can remember the lifetime of service given by our longest-reigning monarch. The book of condolence will be open between 9am and 5pm on weekdays, and between 10am and 5pm on Saturdays.
Alternatively, members of the public may want to sign the electronic book of condolence, which can be found on The Royal Family’s website.
Flowers
Anyone wishing to leave flowers as a mark of respect in Oxford city centre is asked to unwrap them from any packaging and leave them in the designated area outside at County Hall in New Road. The flowers will be removed daily and taken to Christ Church where they will be displayed and eventually composted.
Exhibition
The City Council and the Oxford Mail created an exhibition in Oxford Town Hall earlier this year to mark Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee. The exhibition will be extended to enable residents to remember The Queen’s many visits to Oxford.
Flag flying
Oxford City Council lowered its flags to half-mast on Thursday 8 September.
The City Council will raise its flags to full height from 11am Saturday 10 September to mark the start of His Majesty King Charles III’s reign. The flags will then be lowered back to half-mast just after Oxford’s proclamation on Sunday 11 September. They will remain at half-mast until the day following The Queen’s funeral.
Proclamation
The national proclamation of the accession of King Charles III will take place tomorrow (10/9). The proclamation will then take place in cities across the country. It will take place in Oxford under Carfax Tower at 1pm on Sunday 11 September.
Moment of reflection
There will be a National Moment of Reflection at 8pm on Sunday 18 September to mourn the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and reflect on her life and legacy.
The one-minute silence can be marked privately at home, with friends and family, out on doorsteps, in the street with neighbours, or at locally arranged community events and vigils.
The National Association of Civic Officers has created guidance that provides a suggested format for those wishing to organise a Moment of Reflection in their community.
Service of thanksgiving
Christ Church Cathedral will host a service of thanksgiving for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II from 5.30pm on Sunday 18 September. Members of the public are welcome to attend but must register on Eventbrite. The service will be livestreamed on YouTube.
State funeral
The state funeral of Her Majesty The Queen will take place at Westminster Abbey on Monday 19 September at 11am. The funeral will be followed by a procession from London to Windsor Castle, where the Queen will be laid to rest in St George’s Chapel. Monday 19 September will be a bank holiday.
