Oxford City Council is pleased to help promote the NHS’s excellent Healthy Start initiative which aims to support families on low incomes with extra cash for healthy eating.

“Could you be one of the 600 people in Oxford eligible for between £4.00 and £8.00 per week to buy healthy foods for your family? Nearly £9,000 each week in benefits from the Government’s Healthy Start Programme are going unclaimed in our city.

"It’s really easy to apply. If you are pregnant or have a child under four and live in a low income household, you could be eligible. All you have to do is complete a simple form on line with your NI number and your personal details. Your Healthy Start prepaid ‘credit card’ will be posted to you and you can use it right away to buy food in any shop in Oxford that takes MasterCard.

"If you don’t have access to a computer or a smartphone, your local library or your locality hub can help you."

Carly Roalf, Food Support & Training Manager with Oxford City Council

The card is topped up automatically every week while you are eligible. Users can see their balance by inserting the card at any cashpoint.

The Healthy Start card can be used to buy:

  • plain liquid cow’s milk
  • fresh, frozen, and tinned fruit and vegetables
  • fresh, dried, and tinned pulses
  • Infant formula milk based on cow’s milk.

"Oxford City Council wants everyone to have access to healthy food. It is particularly important for pregnant women and young children to eat well. If you are on a low income, we encourage you to register for your Healthy Start card which pays for items such as fruit, vegetables, milk, beans, pulses and more.  Get some help with your weekly food bill, and get your children off to a good start.”

Councillor Louise Upton, Oxford City Council Member for Healthy Communities
