Oxford City Council today launches a major campaign to attract people to the city centre in the run up to Christmas.

The multi-partner campaign is designed to increase footfall and spend in the city to give local businesses a boost at a crucial time of year following a challenging trading period. The Christmas campaign, which has an Alice in Wonderland theme, will promote Oxford as an excellent shopping, hospitality and tourism destination.

Oxford City Council is delivering a multi-channel marketing, advertising and communications campaign to encourage people to visit the city centre. It has funded the project via the Government’s Contain Outbreak Management Fund to support businesses at a crucial time of year following a challenging period for retail, hospitality, arts and culture and transport.

The campaign will include digital adverts on bus shelters across the county and on-board Thames Travel buses in the south of Oxfordshire. Extensive campaigns on JACKfm, in the Oxford Mail and Oxfordshire Live, plus posters across leisure and community centres. The Dairy Agency, a creative company, has produced the Alice in Wonderland visuals.

The six-week campaign will also feature extensive video content filmed locally by Independent Oxford and Fortitude Communications that will highlight the city’s attractions and why it is a great place to visit. Independent Oxford’s videos will showcase the diverse array of independent shops and restaurants in the city, including in the Covered Market. While Fortitude Communications’ videos will highlight the Westgate, hospitality and cultural offerings.

Oxford City Council’s social media channels will form a central hub for the campaign and share everything that is going on in the city and interactive competitions. It will be regularly updated to highlight the range of retail, hospitality, leisure, cultural and historical attractions Oxford has to offer.

Businesses in the visitor economy have maintained appropriate measures to ensure Oxford remains a safe place to visit this Christmas. All businesses will be encouraged to take part in the campaign by using #VisitOxford on their social media channels.

“Oxford is a beautiful city with a wonderful range of things to do, see and enjoy. The pandemic has seen a big reduction in the number of international visitors to our city and we are keen to continue to support businesses across our city to recover.

“Oxford is particularly magical at this time of year and I would encourage everyone to enjoy our city and remember to support the local businesses that make it so vibrant when planning your Christmas shopping and entertainment.”

Councillor Susan Brown, Leader of Oxford City Council
