"I am shocked and deeply saddened to hear that an MP who was in the process of holding an advice surgery to listen to his constituents was brutally murdered. Our democracy is stronger because elected representatives such as councillors and MPs make themselves available to the public that elect them. It is devastating that yet again an MP has been fatally attacked whilst serving their constituents.

"My thoughts are with the family, friends and colleagues of Sir David Amess. We will be lowering the flags over Oxford Town Hall and Carfax Tower tomorrow morning to pay our respects as a city."
