Oxford’s public leisure centres reopened to customers on 12 April when government restrictions on indoor sport and leisure facilities were lifted, with more facilities opening next week.

Ferry Leisure, Barton Leisure, and Leys Pools and Leisure centres have all opened their doors to customers. Hinksey Outdoor Pool is also now open to the public at its normal temperature.

Reopening Schedule

Leisure centres are operating on a varied reopening schedule. The dates are as follows:

From 12 April

  • Ferry Leisure centre opened its gym and swimming pool (adult lane swimming only)
  • Leys Pool and Leisure Centre is open for gym only

From 19 April

  • Barton Leisure Centre will open for gym only
  • Leys Pools and Leisure will begin a phased swimming programme

Further openings

  • Barton Pool is expected to open in late April
  • Oxford Ice Rink will not be open before step 3 of the government’s roadmap, on 17 May at the earliest

The Council leisure centres offer a range of affordable, no-contract memberships. Non-members can also book one-off sessions. Full details are available on Fusion’s website.

COVID Safety

The government restrictions in place since 12 April permit the opening of indoor leisure and sports facilities for individual exercise or exercise within households or support bubbles only. Group classes and personal training sessions will not be available until the government guidelines allow.

To maintain public safety, centres have increased the cleaning of rooms and equipment. All members are asked to adhere to social distancing guidelines and to remain home if they feel unwell. They have also been asked to wipe down gym equipment before and after use, and hand sanitiser is readily available for both before and after gym sessions.

All sessions must be pre-booked and paid for on the Fusion website or via the Fusion lifestyle app. This ensures that users can socially distance and numbers are kept within manageable levels.

Members are also asked to arrive no more than 10 minutes before a class and to wear a face covering in all communal areas, including when using the bathroom.

Changing rooms are closed, and gym users and swimmers will need to arrive ready changed for exercise.

“We have heard from our leisure user groups how important the leisure centres are to them. We have opened as much as we can as early as we can. We look forward to seeing people back enjoying the gym and swimming facilities.”
