The Council is procuring a multidisciplinary technical team to undertake an appraisal of options for the Gasworks Pipe Bridge.

This will include options for both repair and replacement. We expect to appoint the team by 19 April, and a programme for the completion of the options stage of the work will be published once the team is in place. Options will consider the heritage significance of the bridge.

Given that the closure of the bridge is expected to last for a significant period, the Council is exploring additional measures to prevent unauthorised crossings for safety reasons. These may require planning permission. Fencing has been erected to stop access to the bridge but not prevent access through the underpass on the towpath.

As the footpath that crosses the bridge is a National cycle route, discussions are underway with the County Council on this specific aspect, and officers will work with Cyclox on it.

Alternative crossing points are available at the Gasworks Railway Bridge and Folly Bridge and diversion signs are in place.

We are aware of anti-social behaviour issues associated with the Gasworks Railway Bridge and are currently undertaking an audit to understand these further. In the meantime, the City Council’s Community Response Team and City Centre Ambassadors will add this area to their regular patrols, including where possible during the school run. The bridge is already on the police team’s patrol plan.
