On behalf of the people of the city, Councillor Craig Simmons, the Lord Mayor of Oxford, has written to Oxford University’s Oxford Vaccine Group to express his gratitude for their hard work.

AstraZeneca and Oxford University announced on Monday 23 November 2020 their vaccine is effective in preventing many people getting ill and it has been shown to work in different age groups, including the elderly.

“On behalf of the people of the City, I would like to express my gratitude to the Oxford vaccine team for their hard work, determination and skill in creating a coronavirus vaccine in record time.

“You have perfectly demonstrated the world-leading science and technology that Oxford is known for. Without cutting corners and without hype, you have delivered what many thought impossible; an effective vaccine that is safe, easy to produce at scale, affordable and easy to transport.

“Your work will protect jobs, prevent suffering and save lives on a massive scale.”
