“We have taken the decision to pause the vast majority of our capital projects while Oxford fights the coronavirus pandemic.

“This is the only practical option for projects where face to face consultation with the public is needed in the near future, or where key members of the project team have been redeployed to support our coronavirus response, including the deliveries of food and medication to vulnerable households.

“Projects where construction has already started, or were about to start on site, have now been paused due to social distancing rules or being unable to source essential materials.

“We will continue work on a handful of refurbishment projects, where it is safe to do so and in compliance with the Coronavirus Act 2020, along with critical health and safety work, and the dismantling of the deck at Oxpens car park, the Energy Superhub Oxford project, and projects that are in the pre-consultation phase.  All this work is dependent on staff being able to work safely and other areas of council activity that have a higher priority being fully staffed.

“We would like to thank everyone for their hard work on these projects so far. This decision has not been taken lightly, but we have a duty to protect the health of our employees, our contractors and the wider public.”

Tom Bridgman, Executive Director for Development at Oxford City Council
