Walking and cycling routes - river and canal

River Cherwell

The River Cherwell is a tributary feeding the River Thames. Within the city, it is flows through mostly university/college grounds, but there are lots of areas open to the public to explore.

Christ Church Meadow: One of the most popular walking routes giving free access from the city centre.  Accessed either from St Aldate’s Street or via Rose Lane off the High Street, this circular route goes alongside the River Cherwell and River Thames with incredible views across the meadow and the rear of Christ Church College, where Harry Potter dining-room scenes were filmed. Check the Christ Church website for more information on visiting the meadow.

University Parks: Located close to the city centre, with an excellent cycle connection to Marson, the parks are bordered by the River Cherwell and there are a number of riverside walking routes to follow, including the Mesopotamia Walk.  Cycling in the park is strictly prohibited. Check the University Parks website for a map and opening times.
