We have introduced guidance for a one-way pedestrian system to be used on the busiest streets in Oxford. This will help everyone to manage social distancing during the pandemic.
The following roads are affected and we ask that pedestrians use the pavement on the left side of the road, keeping the buildings and shop fronts immediately on your left side as you move along and the road on your right side. There are signs along the way to help with this.
- Broad Street
- Cornmarket Street
- George Street
- High Street
- Hythe Bridge Street
- Magdalen Street East
- Magdalen Street West
- New Inn Hall Street
- Queen Street
- St Aldate's
For all these streets you will need to move along on the left hand pavement. This is from beginning to end, with the exception of the High Street, where the one-way system ends at Longwall Street.
The Cowley Road is also included in the one-way system from the The Plain to Magdalen Road.
There are rest areas with benches on the following streets:
- Broad Street (next to the Oxford Campus Stores)
- Queen Street on Bonn Square
- Cowley Road (at Manzil Way Gardens)
As of 1 July 2020, there are currently no temporary barriers in places or any changes to controlled crossings. A-boards and street furniture have been removed or kept to a minimum.
There will be stewards available to provide advice and to help to direct people to follow the LEFT HAND rule. Stewards will be wearing yellow hi-vis vests. If you are already in town and need assistance, please call 01865 249811 and one of our officers in the city will try to help.
