Types of fleas in the UK

Most homes encounter dog and cat fleas. Cat fleas are more common, even on dogs. Human fleas are now rare in homes.

Flea biology

Adult fleas lay eggs on animals, but these fall into carpets and floorboards, where they develop into larvae. Larvae feed on debris and adult flea faeces. After the larval stage, they become pupae. Adult fleas usually emerge after a month but can wait longer, sometimes causing infestations in homes without pets. They prefer animal blood but will bite humans in high infestations.

The impact of fleas

Fleas don't typically transmit serious illnesses to humans. However, their bites can be very irritating for both animals and people.

Controlling fleas

  • treat your pet with vet-provided insecticide
  • wash animal bedding at 60°C and vacuum floors and furnishings to remove flea eggs and debris
  • then, treat these areas with a vet-recommended insecticide, following the instructions carefully
