Common UK cockroaches

In the UK, you'll mainly find two types of cockroaches:

  • German Cockroach
  • Oriental Cockroach

We offer a discreet and effective gel bait treatment for cockroaches. Contact us for more details about our service and costs.

Cockroaches are large insects, ranging from 10-23mm, with long antennae and two pairs of wings. The German Cockroach is dark brown and can climb smooth surfaces, while the Oriental cockroach is black.

Health risks of cockroaches

Cockroaches can spread diseases like dysentery and gastro-enteritis as they can carry food germs on their bodies. They contaminate food and surfaces, sometimes even with faecal matter.

Cockroach life cycle

Females produce up to eight egg cases monthly, each containing up to 30 eggs. Nymphs hatch in 2-4 weeks for German cockroaches and 6-12 weeks for Oriental ones. Nymphs resemble smaller adult cockroaches.

Identifying a cockroach problem

Look for egg cases, similar in size and shape to a small kidney bean, and brown in colour. Cockroach faeces may also be visible, resembling black pepper.

Cockroach habitats

They're often found where food is stored or handled, hiding in cracks during the day and active at night. They'll quickly hide when exposed to light.

Preventing cockroach infestations

Keep premises clean, remove food sources and hiding spots. Seal small cracks with latex or silicone and patch larger holes. Keep areas free of debris and rubbish.
