ZEZ impact on Hackney Carriages

Zero Emission Zone (ZEZ) proposal

The new proposals for the ZEZ set a pathway to zero transport emissions in the city by 2035. From 2020 onwards, a ZEZ could apply to some vehicles and journey types, with restrictions increased gradually to all vehicles in the following years to create a largely transport emissions-free city centre by 2035.

You can find detailed information about the ZEZ on our Zero Emission Zone page.

Charging Points

A new rapid charger will be installed in Keble Road in June 2021 to be used by all e-taxis (both Private Hire and Hackney Carriage). This will be followed by another five chargers later this year.

The cost of rapid charging have been fixed at 18p per kwh until November 2022, and will then rise, but remain below market rates.

A limited number of charging bays will be opened to the general public temporarily, while use from the trades is still low. This will be reviewed regularly, and withdrawn once there are enough e-taxis in the trade.

Impact of the ZEZ on Hackney Carriages

It is proposed that Hackney Carriages will be allowed in the ZEZ if they meet the requirements outlined in the below table. These are set out in detail in the Licensing Change proposal. This is agreed in principle, with a decision expected in January 2019.
