A full council tax bill is based on at least 2 adults living in a home. Spouses and partners who live together are jointly responsible for the bill.

You'll get 25% off your bill if:

  • you live on your own (a single person discount)
  • or, all other occupants are disregarded for council tax purposes

You could get a 50% discount if everyone living in your home, including you, is disregarded.

People who are disregarded for council tax purposes

These are the reasons someone could be disregarded:

  • children under 18
  • children over 18 still eligible for child benefit
  • full-time college and university students
  • 18 and 19-year-olds in full-time education
  • foreign language assistants registered with the British Council
  • student midwives
  • persons with serious dementia, learning difficulties, brain injury etc.
  • live-in carers who look after someone who isn't their partner, spouse, or child
  • diplomats
