Oxford in Bloom is turning over a new leaf

Oxford in Bloom is branching out into our communities this year by offering new or existing residents and community groups a share of a £4,000 grant scheme. The scheme will offer financial support to groups who are looking to brighten up their communities with projects with a horticultural or ‘green’ theme.

Examples of projects which could be supported include:

  • Improving or maintaining the green spaces on an estate
  • Renovating a local neglected space
  • Developing a community garden, orchard or vegetable plot.
  • Restoring a churchyard
  • Transforming a bleak residential back alley into a community garden
  • Redeveloping all the front gardens on (part of) a street using any number of schemes, for example hanging baskets or window boxes for growing herbs
  • Forming a Friends group to look after a local park
  • Uniting local retailers to transform a parade of shops

The competition element of the Oxford in Bloom will be replaced with entry into the RHS Thames & Chiltern competition under their expanding ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’ campaign which already attracts over 1,600 groups nationally. “The RHS It’s Your Neighbourhood campaign supports community groups in cleaning up and greening up their immediate local environment - whether that’s the street they live in, or a small patch of communal land needing a revamp”.

Judging would be undertaken by RHS judges in July. Results will be announced at the Thames & Chiltern awards ceremony in September.

The deadline for applications is Sunday 19 March 2017.
