Local history talk by Susie Mayhew

In 1253 the ‘small businessmen’ of Oxford wrote to Henry III to complain about the Oxford ‘Magnates’ who were misusing their powers over taxation and commerce, and otherwise abusing their authority. These Oligarchs, living mostly around Turl Street and Radcliffe Square, were brought to book by the travelling Magistrates of 1261 and 1285. Discover the way a small group of powerful men stitched up the City of Oxford.

    Arrival from 1.30pm for a 2pm start.
