The staff in my local shop serve cakes and bread and then handle money without washing their hands. Is this a health risk?

Current opinion is that money does not provide ideal conditions for bacterial growth, therefore the risk of cross-contamination from money to food is minimal. Accordingly, there is no specific legal prohibition on staff handling both money and food.

However, we do recommend that staff maintain good personal hygiene by frequently washing their hands and also to avoid excessive handling of open food.
