How much Council Tax will you pay?

The amount of Council Tax you pay will depend on:

• the banding of your property
• where you live
• any discounts, reductions or exemptions that you are entitled to
• any Council Tax Benefit that you are entitled to

Banding

Your Council Tax bill is based on the band which was allocated to your property by the Valuation Office Agency.

The band is based on the market value of the property on 1 Apr 1991. If your property was built after this date, the Valuation Office Agency will decide on the band according to what they think the market value of the property would have been on 1 Apr 1991. This means that current market values are not a good indication of the band of a property.

The Valuation Office Agency are responsible for maintaining the 'Valuation List,' which shows all of the properties in Oxford with their bands and effective dates. The Valuation List can be inspected at our offices in St Aldate's and at the Valuation Office.

The Valuation Office website allows you to check the banding of any property in England and Wales. You can then look up the Council Tax Amount for the particular band.
