Welcome to Oxford

Trees and Development

The Council has a duty to ensure that when it grants planning permission for new development that adequate provision is made for the protection of existing trees or for the planting of new trees, as appropriate. The Council's policies for trees in relation to development are given in the Oxford Local Plan 2001-2016: CP1; NE15; NE16.

The Tree Officer advises the Planning Control Section on the impact of development of on existing trees and in doing so refers to a range of good practice guidance. For example, British Standard 5837; 2005 'Trees in relation to development- Recommendations' provides helpful guidance on how to achieve a satisfactory juxtaposition of trees and buildings in new development.
