Welcome to Oxford

Exempt buildings

There are certain buildings and building works that do not need formal application. This is generally because they are:

  • non-habitable
  • low risk
  • controlled by other legislation
  • such that it would be unreasonable to exercise any formal control over the construction

Please see the document below for a guide to exempt buildings:

Exempt Buildings and Formal Approval Required Guide

Even though your proposals may be exempt from the Building Regulations you still may require Planning Permission. This has to be applied for separately and advice should be obtained from our Planning Control Team.

It is advisable to notify both Building Control and Planning Control with written details and sketches of your proposals to confirm that any planned work is exempt from Building Regulations and has the required Planning Permission.
