Prosecution of Illegal Street Trader

Released on 23 Jun 2008

Yosef Arvatz from Middlesex was convicted on Friday 20th June at Oxford Magistrates Court, of Illegal Street Trading and Aiding and Abetting others to do so. This was as a result of a Council led operation with Police, Trading Standards and The Immigration Agency in September 2007. Five other illegal traders were also convicted.

Mr Arvatz appeared in court and was fined £100 and ordered to pay costs of £225.

Mr Arvatz has been reported on further occasions for other offences with these cases still pending.

Yosef Arvatz and all other traders are not welcome to trade illegally in Oxford and continued action will be taken against them where appropriate.

Councillor Bob Price, Leader of Oxford City Council says: "We are pleased with the overall result of these operations and will continue to take action against them. We are disappointed that the fine was not higher to act as a better deterrent.

"This operation will send a message that Oxford is serious in dealing with illegal street traders and hope that this will prevent them from carrying out activities in the future."
