Oxford Online Neighbourhood Discussion Forums Launched
Released on 2 Nov 2007
Oxford City Council is helping to launch Oxford's first online neighbourhood discussion forum.
Oxford Neighbourhood Discussion Forums will be a place where anyone living or working in the city can go online to exchange ideas, opinions, and information on local affairs.
An event hosted by E-democracy to highlight the benefits of these forums is being held on Wednesday 7 November from 6pm - 7pm in the Town Hall. All people who live or work in Oxford are welcome to come along.
Councillor Richard Huzzey, Ward Councillor for Holywell in the centre of Oxford says: "I think these discussion forums are really good news for the people of Oxford.
"It will give everyone a chance to have their say, discuss topics that are important to them and exchange ideas on how to make things better.
"I am looking forward to getting involved with the online discussions and getting a better idea of what really matters to the people in Oxford."
Tim Erickson, founder of E-democracy says "We have set these discussion forums up all over the world with the aim of bringing local people together to discuss issues that effect them.
"I would encourage as many people as possible to come along to the event on 7 November to find out more about what benefits of the forum and sign up to start discussing issues today."
The Central South and West forum is already up and running but needs more people to join to really get the discussion going. More local forums will spread throughout the city over the coming months.
The forum is an independent project, run by volunteers whose only interest is to improve the working of local democracy. Oxford City Council does not own the forum. The forum is hosted by E-democracy.org, a non-profit, non-partisan, citizen-based initiative launched in 1994.
Local City Councillors, Oxford City Council officers, and other local organisations will be watching what happens on the forum so people can make their voice heard to the people with the power to make a difference.
During the initial launch period, Oxford City Council's Online Communications Officer will be the Forum Manager but eventually, we want the residents of Oxford to run the forums for themselves.
To sign up to the Central South and West forum and start getting your voice heard, visit the E-democracy website.
