Flood Affected Allotments to get Rent Rebate

Oxford City Council's new administration has agreed a 50% rent rebate for four allotment associations affected by the two serious periods of flooding in 2007/08.

It has also agreed to draw up a new long term policy on rent setting for allotments and for the circumstances in which rebates will be allowable. This new policy will be agreed in October.

Councillor Bob Timbs, City Executive Board Member for Leisure and Sport, says: "I have asked Council officers to produce a policy paper reviewing the Council's overall approach to rent-setting for allotments by October.

"This new policy will include the provision for rebates to Associations where allotments are made unusable for extended periods due to flooding or other natural disasters.

"In respect of the 2007-08 floods, we propose to rebate the rents for four affected associations by 50% for the year in question."

The allotment associations being granted a rebate are Cowmead, Spragglesea Mead, Osney and St. Thomas, and Cripley Meadow.

The total cost of the rent rebates will be approximately £1,500.

Oxford has 36 allotment sites across the city. Over the last 3 years, the Council has invested £450,000 on re-fencing and security measures at allotment sites around Oxford.
