New Tree Management Guidelines Agreed

Oxford City Council's City Executive Board have agreed new tree management guidelines to make sure Oxford's residents are kept informed of any work that needs to be carried out on the council's tree stock.

Under the new guidance, Ward councillors and Area Committees will be notified well in advance of any tree works being carried out by the Council. If emergency work is needed because a tree is found to be in a dangerous condition, Ward councillors will be contacted by telephone to discuss the reasons for the emergency.

The Council's Planning Department will also look into ways of encouraging developers to notify the Council and local residents when they are carrying out tree works in connection with a planning permission which has been granted.

Councillor Bob Timbs, City Executive Board Member for Leisure and Sport, says: "I have asked council officers to ensure that Ward councillors are notified well in advance of any tree work in their area, and that if a tree is judged to be in a dangerous condition requiring urgent action, councillors will be contacted by phone in advance of any action so that there can be a discussion about the reasons for the action."

The council is currently in the process of surveying all 32,000 trees on council owned land and is committed to ensuring that they continually inform the community about this survey as work progresses.
