Free Bin Swaps to Encourage Recycling

Residents in Oxford are being encouraged to recycle more by swapping their current wheelie bin for a smaller size bin.

It used to cost residents £5 to swap their bin but this charge has now been abolished to make it free.

Councillor John Tanner, City Executive Board Member for a Cleaner Greener Oxford, says: "By making it free for residents to swap their current bin for a smaller size bin, we are encouraging residents to create less landfill waste and recycle more.

"This scheme encourages residents to think about what they throw away whilst at the same time creating more space in their front garden or back yard.

"This year, we are also waiving the £25 charge for blue wheelie bins (for mixed recycling) for elderly and disabled people who have assisted delivery, and for large households in Oxford. Up to two lids for recycling boxes are also free to Oxford residents.

"Over the last two years Oxford has doubled the amount of waste that is recycled, which is a fantastic achievement by residents and the Council's recycling team.

"But we want to increase the city's rate of recycling even further by streamlining the system to make recycling easier for everyone."

Residents should contact City Works on 01865 252900 to organise the swap.

All households in the city are also entitled to extra recycling containers for free. Households can get up to two blue boxes, two green boxes and one garden waste sack free of charge by phoning City Works.
