Council is a top performing strategic housing authority

Released on 24 Jul 2008

Oxford City Council has been recognised as one of the top performing councils for strategic housing provision in the country.

The Audit Commission today reported that Oxford City Council is delivering a 'good' strategic housing service and has 'excellent prospects for improvement'. On a scale of none to three the council has been awarded two stars.

The inspection looked at the work the council does to reduce homelessness, improve the quality of private rented accommodation, and provide affordable homes.

The report found that the council has worked effectively with partners to provide information and support that is readily available and easy to access by vulnerable groups. The proactive approach taken has resulted in a reduction in the number of people becoming homeless in the city.

It noted that the council is proactively and successfully improving the conditions in private rented accommodation in the city, particularly houses of multiple occupation.

The council is also delivering a high number of affordable homes through strong partnership working and robust planning.

Ed Turner, City Executive Board Member for Housing, says, "Housing is a key priority so we are delighted that the Audit Commission has recognised that we are delivering a good service to our residents.

"We realise that there is still more work to be done. In particular, we will be focusing on clamping down on rogue landlords and introducing a landlord accreditation scheme, inline with the Audit Commission's recommendations."

Peter Sloman, Chief Executive Oxford City Council says, "Meeting housing need in Oxford is a demanding job with so many pressures on housing and land.

"We are pleased that the many difficulties that we face have been recognised and the efforts of councillors, staff and partner organisations celebrated."
