Latest NewsStudents Focus of Nightsafe Safety Campaign
Following the success of the operation last year, the Nightsafe Partnership have decided to run a similar campaign this year to inform students that drink fuelled bad behaviour will not be tolerated in Oxford. Oxford Nightsafe has teamed up with Jack FM to spread the message. Jack FM will be broadcasting live during the final week of the Oxford Brookes Freshers' Fair and Jack FM staff will be handing out leaflets to provide information. Oxford Nightsafe and Jack FM have also come up with a hard-hitting two-week radio campaign covering a number of aspects associated with people having a safe night out in Oxford. Jack FM will broadcast real life stories of people who have abused drugs and alcohol to illustrate the consequences. Crime Reduction Officers will also be attending the Oxford University Freshers' Fair on the 8 and 9 October 2008. Operation BratwurstThe Nightsafe campaign is running in conjunction with Operation Bratwurst, a police campaign in East Oxford. Police officers and police community support officers will be in East Oxford to inform people about responsible drinking and the consequences of when things get out of hand. Officers will be visiting pubs and clubs handing out posters and giving advice to licensees on how to deal with drug misuse on their premises. A drug dog detection team will also be out in East Oxford. Multi-agency InspectionsIn addition to Operation Bratwurst, Oxford Nightsafe will be carrying out multi-agency inspections (Police, Trading Standards, Fire and Rescue, Oxford City Council) on selected licensed premises. Councillor Sajjad Malik, City Executive Board Member for Safer Communities says: "The message is clear: alcohol related anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated in Oxford. "Students coming to Oxford must be informed of what is acceptable and what is not. We must also make them feel safe on our streets and make sure everyone enjoys their night out in the city." Inspector Brian Cooper says "We will be targeting anti-social behaviour, violent crime, auto crime and criminal damage. "With a new intake of students into the area it is about setting acceptable standards of conduct, while helping and reassuring students and the greater community of East Oxford. "Police will be taking a friendly but firm line with everyone during this operation, but if students commit offences they should be aware that we will be liaising with the Universities so that they can consider whether action is required under their internal discipline procedures." Nightsafe was launched in October 2004. The Nightsafe partnership, which includes Oxford City Council, Thames Valley Police, Oxfordshire County Council, Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service, OX1, Oxford City Primary Health Care Trust, was set up to combat binge drinking and alcohol related crime.
