St Giles' Fair 2008

Released on 3 Sep 2008

 News St Giles' Fair

Thousand of people are expected to flock to the centre of Oxford for the annual St Giles' Fair which takes place on Monday 8 and Tuesday 9 September.

The fair will be open from 11am to 11pm on both days.

This year's fair-goers can look forward to all the traditional fun fair rides and amusements like candy floss stalls, helter skelter, dodgems and waltzers combined with some exciting up-to-date, white-knuckle rides including Evolution, Chaos, the Storm Booster, and the Superbowl.

After a break of several years, the popular Wild Mouse rollercoaster will also be returning.

The fair will be officially opened by the Lord Mayor, Councillor Susanna Pressel at the Hebborn's Waltzer, just south of Pusey Street, on Monday 8 September.

The Lord Mayor of Oxford, Councillor Susanna Pressel, says: "St Giles' Fair is one of the highlights in Oxford's entertainment calendar and I am very much looking forward to it.

"For two days St Giles is transformed. The striking contrast between the ancient college buildings and the brash and colourful fairground equipment makes this a unique and unforgettable occasion.

"The fair is hugely enjoyable and I would encourage local residents and visitors of all ages to come along and join in the fun."

Road Closures

Road closures apply from midnight on Saturday night (6 September) / Sunday morning (7 September) until 8.30am on Wednesday (10 September). The roads closed will be St Giles, Banbury Road (south of Parks Road), Woodstock Road (south of Observatory Street - although access is maintained to Little Clarendon Street), Magdalen Street, Magdalen Street East, Pusey Street and Beaumont Street (east of Gloucester Street/St John Street).

Temporary bus stops to replace those in Magdalen Street will be set up in Broad Street for the duration of the fair.

History

The fair dates back to 1625 when it was a parish festival to celebrate the feast of the patron saint, St Giles. In the 18th century it was a toy fair, then in the 19th century it was a general children's fair.
