Released on 3 Sep 2008
Oxford City Council has set the pace for other local authorities by making the commitment support seven of their community centres to obtain VISIBLE status by March 2009.
West Oxford Community Centre is the second community centre in the city to be awarded VISIBLE status, and only the fifth nationally. The first centre in the country to be awarded the status was Cuttleslowe Community Centre in June 2007
VISIBLE status was awarded by Community Matters in recognition of West Oxford Community Association's good work with the community.
VISIBLE stands for:
- Voice to represent issues of local concern
- Independent and politically neutral organisation
- Service provider for local people
- Initiator of projects to meet locally identified need
- Builder of partnerships with other local organisations and groups
- strong Local network of people and organisations
- a way to Engage local people to become active in their communities
Liz Cleverly, Community Matters, says "I am very imperessed with West Oxford Community Association it is an example of community activity at its best."
Richard Grant, West Oxford Community Association, says: "Going through the VISIBLE process was a big challenge but it was rewarding too. The file that we produced for our accreditation is a fine snapshot of local history and a great example of the variety of activity that community associations generate.
"I am proud to have been through the VISIBLE process, but most of all I am proud of how the West Oxford Community Association team performed on the assessment day."
