Loch Fyne restaurant prosecuted for fly tipping
Released on 19 Aug 2008
Loch Fyne Restaurants have been fined £2,000 for fly tipping in Jericho. They have also been ordered to pay Oxford City Council's costs of £258.85.
On Friday 15 February, Environmental Enforcement Officers found four large sacks of rubbish abandoned on the pavement on the corner of King Street and Jerico Street (photos attached). The contents of the bags made it clear that the rubbish originated from the Loch Fyne restaurant in Walton Street, Jericho.
The Enforcement Officers visited the restaurant and the General Manager accompanied them to the site of the rubbish sacks. He admitted that the rubbish belonged to the restaurant and arranged to have it removed.
Ian Wright, Oxford City Council, Environmental Health says "We take fly tipping very seriously and we will always prosecute any business or individual that we catch committing this offense."
Councillor John Tanner, Executive Board Member for Cleaner, Greener Oxford says "This successful prosecution sends out an important message to other food vendors in Oxford.
"We have some world class restaurants and food outlets in Oxford and they all need to behave responsibly. Fly tipping restaurant waste is a disgraceful blot on our city's reputation."
The fine was reduced from £3,000 in light of Loch Fyne's timely guilty plea, the fact that it was a first offence and the steps taken by Loch Fyne to ensure it does not happen again.
