Oxford City Council takes action against illegal street trader
Released on 5 Aug 2008
On Friday 1 August, Yosef Arvatz, aged 39, of Woolmer Gardens, Edgeware, was convicted by the Oxford Magistrates' Court in relation to two counts of illegal street trading in Cornmarket Street, Oxford on 15 and 16 December 2007. District Judge Wright fined Mr. Arvatz a total of £1200 and ordered that he pay £200 towards Oxford City Council's costs.
Oxford City Council is now considering whether to apply for an Anti-Social Behaviour Order against Mr Arvartz.
Kevin Keating, Oxford City Council, Street Trading Officers says, "We welcome the conviction and we will remain consistent in our approach to investigate illegal street trading, and we now provide cover to investigate any incidents of illegal street trading seven days a week."
Councillor Sajjad Malik, Executive Board Member for Safer Communities says, "Oxford City Council will continue to monitor the area closely to protect legitimate traders and businesses that may be affected by illegal street trading operations.
"We thank Thames Valley Police, Trading Standards and the UK Border & Immigration Agency for their support in the City Council led operations."
There has been no influx of organised illegal street traders in Cornmarket since the crack-down operation in December 2007.
