Tree Management Programme Continues
Released on 10 Jun 2008
The council is continuing its Tree Management programme for the 32,000 trees in council owned parks, cemeteries, allotments, car parks and on Section 42 highways across the city.
Bartlett Tree Care won the contract to survey 32,000 trees over three years, and to create a database of tree stock to highlight any arboricultural work required. To date they have inspected 10,705 trees.
A number of trees in Bury Knowle Park will require some arboricultural work. This work will include crown reduction, heavy pruning, pollarding and, where absolutely necessary, felling.
As a landowner, the Council has a duty to survey its tree stock to ensure safety. The dangers of falling trees are well-publicised and the Council's first duty is to do all it can to protect Oxford's citizens.
These results are robust and reliable and Oxford City Council has a duty and a responsibility to carry out this work, and is committed to ensuring that they continually inform the community about this survey as work progresses.
Councillor Bob Price, Leader of Oxford City Council, says: "The council will obviously be careful to observe all safety advice, but officers have been instructed to inform local councillors in advance of any major tree works so that they can consult local residents and other groups."
