Free Swimming - Oxford is ahead of the game

Released on 16 Jun 2008

Last week the government announced plans for a £130 million investment package to make swimming more accessible.

The plan aims to provide free access to swimming pools for under-16's and over-60's by April 2009, with an aim of free swimming for all by 2012.

Oxford City Council has proven to be ahead of the game in what sport body ISRM's chief executive Ralph Riley has called: "One of the most exciting and forward thinking moves to affect swimming for many years."

Since April 2006 all under 17s have had free access to any of the six Oxford City Council swimming pools. We also offer a timetable of regular free swim sessions for over-60's.

We have recorded 151,129 free swims for under 17s across the Council's swimming pools since the scheme was introduced in April 2006.
