 News Museum

Come to the Museum of Oxford during the May Bank Holiday half term and you'll find lots of activities to take part in.

Children can take part in workshops, creation stations, and gallery trails during the week.

There are three different types of workshops to enjoy. They run from 10.30am - midday and 2pm until 3.30pm.

  • Tuesday 27 May: Trash to Treasures: £2.50 Use recycled rubbish to create treasures inspired by the beautiful medieval treasures in the museum galleries.
  • Wednesday 28 May: Victorian Favours: £4.00 Meet a costumed Victorian gift maker and create your own traditional Victorian presents to take home.
  • Thursday 29 May: Printing Pictures: £4.00 / £5.00 Try out printing techniques with local printmaker Rahima Kenner and produce a piece of work inspired by the museum's Artweeks exhibition. Morning session 10.30am - 12pm for 5 - 8 years and afternoon session 2.00 - 4.00pm for 8 - 12 years.

The art and craft activities are for children aged between 5 and 12. Places are limited and pre-booking is recommended.

On Friday 30 May, everyone is invited to join in with some magical musical storytelling with local storyteller Marguerite Osborne.

May is Museums and Galleries Month (MGM) which celebrates the nation's wonderful cultural places, and this is the perfect time to visit the Museum of Oxford and find out more about all the things it can offer local visitors.

For 2008 the Museum of Oxford is offering a special family gallery trail throughout the month. Follow the 'Ideas and Innovations' trail through the galleries from stone axes to Morris engines and discover the amazing ideas Oxford people have had in the past. This costs £1 per person and includes a free souvenir Museum of Oxford pencil.

In addition, there are family drop-in arts and crafts making Morris Motor models in the galleries, a brass rubbing trail, and a pack of activities inspired by Lewis Carroll's favourite word and number puzzles and the museum's 'A-Z of Literary Oxford' exhibition.

Also on at the museum this month is 'Bird's Eye View', an exhibition of painting and printmaking by Oxford artists, Suzette Broad, Jackie Conway and Elaine Williams. All members of Oxford Printmakers, Suzette, Jackie and Elaine are showing a selection of their work in different media, from oils to etchings.

For more information on all events or to book a place on a workshop - please phone museum on 01865 252761.

Admission to the museum is free.
