Latest NewsCity consult on expanding alcohol ban Oxford City Council are asking the public for their views on whether to give the police powers to remove alcohol from people who behave unacceptably in those areas of the city not covered by an Alcohol Free Zones. The powers would cover the areas outside the current Alcohol Free Zones where there is a zero tolerance approach to drinking alcohol in public places. Outside the Alcohol Free Zones the police would use the powers against people with alcohol who are causing alarm, distress or harassment to others. The police would be able to confiscate people's alcohol and if their behaviour continued they would be issued with a fine or arrested. The public have been consulted through Your Oxford, the resident's newsletter, and the Citizen's Panel survey (Talkback). Members of the public can also email their comments to saferoxford@oxford.gov.uk or write to the Community Safety Officer, Strategy and Review, 3rd Floor, Town Hall, St Aldate's, Oxford, OX1 1BX. It is hoped that the new powers will be adopted in April. Currently the Alcohol Free Zones in the city cover parts of Blackbird Leys, Walton Street, The Plain and most of the city centre.
