Lord Mayor welcomes Polish rowers
Released on 16 Mar 2006
The Lord Mayor will welcome a delegation from the northern Polish city of Bydgoszcz to Oxford this Friday.
The delegation includes a crew of rowers who will race an Oxford University crew on part of the Boat Race course this weekend.
Also among the delegation to attend the Town Hall reception will be the Mayor of Bydgoszcz, the rector of the city's university, staff from its art gallery and members of a Polish jazz band.
A number of council officials from Bydgoszcz will meet with their Oxford City Council counterparts during the visit on Friday 17 March between 5pm - 6.30pm. There will also be an exhibition of Polish photographs on display in the Town Hall reception area during the visit.
The Lord Mayor of Oxford, Councillor Bob Price, says: "We are delighted to be able to welcome the rowers and other representatives of the city of Bydgoszcz to Oxford.
"The opening up of the European Union and the east is creating a range of new opportunities for links to be established between the accession countries, like Poland, and the UK.
"I hope that this visit will lead to many more visits in both directions."
The race between the Bydgoszcz crew and the University of Oxford 2nd boat, ISIS, takes place on the Thames on Sunday 19 March.
They will be followed onto the water by Oxford's Boat Race crew, who will race an Italian national team, just two weeks before the Boat Race itself.
