Residents' Parking Permits in Oxford City
Released on 17 Aug 2006
Oxford City Council has sent a letter to Oxfordshire County Council setting out their concerns about charges for residents' parking permits.
Councillor John Goddard, Leader of Oxford City Council, says: "The letter clearly states that we need clarification on certain aspects of the County Council's proposed charging scheme.
"The County want to designate certain areas for residents' parking and charge for residents' and visitors' parking. We are considering whether any decision by the County Council to adopt these proposals would be lawful.
"The letter sets out two areas of concern. The first relates to the apparent surplus already existing in the on-street parking accounts. The second relates to the consultation exercise carried out by the County.
"We believe that the proposals were not consulted on while they were at a formative stage. We believe that the County Council had already decided that they were going to charge for residents and visitors parking before any consultation took place.
"We have asked for clarification on these two issues at an early date."
The letter follows a motion in notice at Full Council over the implementation of the county's scheme which was unanimously supported.
The scheme, if implemented, would see residents being charged for parking outside their homes.
