Local celebrities support Streets for People Day
Released on 24 Aug 2007
Two local celebrities have already pledged their support for Oxford City Council's Streets for People Day.
Francie Smee, who appeared on BBC's Castaway programme, and Alex James, Blur bass player, are both supporting the day on Saturday 22 September.
The day celebrates our streets as valuable social spaces, not just space for traffic. There will be events taking place in the city centre in Broad Street, as well as in local communities.
Francie, says: "My three month stay on a New Zealand island as a BBC Castaway reinforced my belief that fresh air and exercise have the most beneficial health advantages, therefore by walking or cycling to work not only will you benefit, but so will Oxford!"
Alex, says: "This is a wonderful scheme. Oxford is a rare thing, a city designed around pedestrians rather than cars. That is something to be celebrated."
In Broad Street there will be a number of activities including a street market with local produce and fair trade goods and fun activities for children to enjoy.
Three bus companies will be offering free travel to under 16's across Oxfordshire as part of the celebration.
The free travel is all day for under 16's with Oxford Bus Company, Stagecoach Oxford and Thames Travel. There is a maximum of three children for every accompanying adult.
You can get involved with the event by coming along to Broad Street or one of the other community events or hold your own.
