No spare change - just park and phone
Released on 8 Aug 2007
Hundreds of motorists are now using their mobile phone to pay for their car parking at Oxford City Council's pay and display car parks.
The scheme means that people can use their mobile to phone or text to pay for their car parking using their credit or debit card.
Between 200 and 250 people are now using the system every week only six months after the scheme was launched.
Councillor Jean Fooks, Executive Member for a Cleaner City, says: "It is excellent news that we now have about 250 people using the system every week. I hope that more and more people will use it as it does stop people worrying about having the correct change for car parking."
There is also a facility so that motorists can receive a text message to let them know when their parking time is almost up. They can also extend their parking session if they need to without dashing back to the car park.
The system is being provided by a company called Verrus and is being trialled for 12 months.
It is available in Worcester Street car park, Gloucester Green Underground car park, Oxpens car park, Oxpens Coach and Lorry park, Abbey Place car park and St. Clements car park.
Credit and debit cards can currently be used in the Westgate multi-storey car park during the operating hours of the control room and is not part of the new scheme.
