Environment, waste and recycling

Improved Recycling Scheme - October 2010

Improved Recycling Scheme advert

We asked you recently about our recycling service. The results of the survey showed that you wanted a simpler system and to be able to recycle more types of materials.

In response to this, from October 2010 we are introducing new collection days and changing the way Oxford City Council collects your recycling and waste. These changes will make it a lot simpler to recycle and improve our recycling rate of all household waste.

What is the improved recycling collection service?

The improved recycling collection service will be simpler to use. You will be able to put all your recyclables into one bin and recycle even more materials, including most plastics and drinks cartons.

In September 2010, most households in the City of Oxford (except flats) will receive a new 240 litre blue wheeled bin for recycling, which will be collected fortnightly.

We will continue to collect your garden waste sacks and green wheeled bin fortnightly and food waste caddies weekly.

Some residents may feel that a 240 litre blue wheeled bin is too large for their property.

If this is the case, you can continue to use your blue and green recycling boxes.

Alternatively, there will be smaller wheeled bins available that may be better for your property.

The new improved recycling collection service will cost less and be better for the environment. Please help Oxford to reduce waste and recycle more.

When will the improved recycling collection service start?

The improved recycling collection service will start in October 2010.

Don't worry - you'll get more detailed information on how the improved recycling service will work and a full list of materials that can be recycled well before the service starts.

What if my home can't accommodate a 240 litre blue wheeled bin for recycling?

For some properties, a 240 litre blue wheeled bin for recycling will not be suitable. You need to let us know if you:

  • already have a blue wheeled bin for recycling. This will be big enough to contain the extramaterials that you can recycle
  • would prefer to continue to use the green and blue recycling boxes that you already have
  • would like to request a smaller 140 litre blue wheeled bin for recycling instead of, or in addition to your recycling boxes

Unless you tell us by Friday 30 July 2010, we will deliver a 240 litre blue wheeled bin for your recycling in September 2010.

You have a choice of two wheeled bin sizes

Bin size      240 litre               140 litre
Height        1063mm              1054mm
Width         570mm                480mm
Depth         720mm                560mm
Capacity      up to 4 boxes      up to 2 boxes

What if I live in a flat or a communal area?

If there is already a recycling and waste collection service in place, please continue to use this arrangement. If there are to be changes to your service, we will tell you nearer the time.

What happens to your recycling waste?

We are now able to take our recycling to a new local material recycling facility in Enstone.

This outlet has modern technology that enables them to process more materials and this is why we are now able to collect a greater range of materials.

Why do we need to change?

  • To make recycling easier for you
  • Increase the range of material we can recycle and collect
  • Provide amore efficient service and better value for money
  • Reduce damage to the environment
