The Museum of Oxford is an essential starting point to discover the fascinating history of the city and University of Oxford.

The story of Oxford is brought to life through original artefacts, college treasures and period room settings from pre-historic times up to the 20th Century.

Artifact of the Week

One of the many fascinating artifacts to view in the Museum of Oxford is a biscuit tin given by Lewis Carroll to Alice Liddell in 1892.

Alice Liddell, the daughter of a family friend, is widely believed to be the real Alice in Carroll's famous novels Alice in Wonderland and its sequel Through the Looking-Glass. In  Through the Looking-Glass, the final chapter "A Boat, Beneath A Sunny Sky" is an acrostic of the real Alice's name: Alice Pleasance Liddell.

Lewis Carroll oversaw the design of the biscuit tin and ordered 300 to give to his young friends on the occasion of his 60th birthday. The one in the Museum of Oxford was used by Alice and her family.
