Welcome to Oxford

Countryside Service

The Countryside service promotes nature conservation and enjoyment of the natural environment in and around Oxford.

Photo of Countryside staff

A team of 4 rangers manages 900 acres of countryside in and around Oxford for you to enjoy, including:

  • Shotover Country Park
  • Port Meadow (a 300 acre grazing common)
  • Twenty nature parks and reserves
  • several Sites of Specific Scientific Interest
  • a wide range of habitats and landscapes.

All of these places are open to the public, and most have unrestricted access.

The Service is working with partners to:

  • Increase biodiversity across the whole city
  • Promote enjoyment of Oxford's Countryside

We are focusing work where it will be most effective.

Oxford Volunteer Rangers

Oxford City Council Rangers are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to help them care for the City's countryside. The Rangers meet regularly on Thursdays to carry out a wide range of tasks at nature reserves and parks in and around the City.
