Garden Waste and Composting

All households with a garden are provided with a green garden waste bag. This bag is collected fortnightly. For details about collection days please see our bin collection page.

branches no larger than 7.5cm (3") in diameter	pet waste

What else can I do with my garden and kitchen waste?

At least 30% of the contents of the average household bin could be composted at home. Items you can compost at home include:

fruit and vegetable peelings
tea bags and coffee grounds
flowers and grass cuttings
cardboard egg boxes
bedding from vegetarian pets (straw/hay)
shredded paper
garden prunings
natural fibre clothing (wool/cotton)

Home composting is an inexpensive way to help the environment, and at the same time make your own quality organic compost.

Advantages of using compost include:

helping your garden plants without the expense and inconvenience of obtaining fertilisers
helping sandy soils to retain moisture but can also open up clay soils to help reduce water logging
reducing the need for peat, so helps to cut the demand for peat extraction in sensitive areas
land filling of organic waste produces methane. Methane has 30 times the global warming potential of carbon dioxide
