Air Pollution in OxfordFollowing a series of Local Air Quality assessments , we declared an Air Quality Management Area (AQMA) in central Oxford in 2001, and further confirmed the AQMA in 2003. Green Road Roundabout AQMA was added in 2005, with other possible sites identified in further detailed assessments in 2006 and 2007. The process of Local Air Quality Management as required by Government under Part IV of the Environment Act in 1995 requires local authorities with AQMA's to produce action plans to improve local air quality. Where road traffic is the main source of pollution local authorities are recommended to integrate action plans into Local Transport Plans (LTP's). We have produced a final action plan, setting out what may be done to meet the air quality objectives within the city centre AQMA. Measures to improve air quality are included within Oxfordshire County Council's Local Transport Plan for 2006-2011. The final action plan considered cost-effective measures to improve local air quality, including examining the feasibility of a Low Emission Zone (LEZ) for central Oxford. An independent report on the feasibility of an LEZ for Oxford is currently being undertaken, with initial findings available during 2007, and final recommendations in 2008. Air quality management area
Air Quality Management Areas are based on the areas in central Oxford where the annual mean nitrogen dioxide objective will not be met.

A series of review and assessments of Oxford's air quality have been conducted to identify problem areas and determine a course of action to bring improvements.
Air quality action plan
An Air Quality Action Plan has been developed in conjunction with the County Council, and integrated into the Local Transport Plan. The objective is to develop effective measures to improve air quality in central Oxford.

Smoke Control Areas
The City Council has completed its Smoke Control Programme which has resulted in most of the City area being designated as Smoke Control Areas under the Clean Air Act 1993. This prohibits smoke emissions from the burning of any form of solid fuel within domestic premises, including garden sheds and greenhouses.
