Welcome to Oxford

Food Safety

Our Food Safety Team aims to ensure all food served and sold in the City is safe to eat. It enforces food safety legislation in 1,600 food businesses from a greengrocer to a university college kitchen. The team:

  • inspects all food businesses to check standards of hygiene
  • provides advice to food business operators
  • provides food hygiene training courses
  • investigates cases of food poisoning
  • investigates food complaints

Food hygiene training

It is the responsibility of the proprietor of a food business to ensure that food handlers engaged in the food business are supervised, instructed and trained in food hygiene matters commensurate with their work activities.

Safer Food Better Business

Safer Food Better Business is a documented food safety management pack introduced by the Food Standards Agency to help small catering businesses comply with the new hygiene regulations that came into force in January 2006.
