What is an Area Committee?

Area Committees work in partnership with residents, the police, NHS Representatives, and other organisations to drive forward local projects and make decisions about local issues. Attending your local Area Committee gives you a chance to keep up to date with Council decisions being made in your area.

Area Committees started in Oxford in November 2001. Since then they have met on a regular monthly basis, with occasional ad hoc meetings to deal with particular issues.

There are six Area Committees in Oxford:

Who makes up the membership of an Area Committee?

Each Area Committee is made up of the ward councillors for that area and, on a non-voting basis, the Oxfordshire County Councillors for the area and the parish councils.

Partnerships have also been delevoped with the Police, who are usually present at the Area Committees, and NHS representatives in Oxford.

Each Area Committee appoints its own Chair and Vice-Chair and is supported by an Area Co-ordinator.

What are Area Committees responsible for?

The Area Committees form part of our democratic structure and are responsible for the following services in their areas:

In addition, Area Committees play an active role in shaping our services and carrying out consultation in their specific area.

Is there a local plan for my area?

Each Area has developed an Area Plan. These plans are partnership-based plans which are shaping and improving services provided in each area. The plans outline our priorities for each area over the coming years. Visit our Area Plans page for more information and to see your local area plan.
