What is HIV and AIDS?

HIV is an infection which can sometimes develop into AIDS. It is most commonly passed on by unprotected sexual intercourse (vaginal, oral or anal without using a condom) but can also be transmitted by sharing contaminated needles and syringes, from an infected mother to her baby during pregnancy, childbirth or breastfeeding, or from contaminated blood or blood products.

The virus attacks the infection fighting cells of the body's immune system which, over time, weakens and becomes unable to defend the body against everyday bacteria and viruses.
